What is APQP and PPAP?

APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) is the launch framework that defines what quality deliverables need to be planned, completed, and approved before full production. PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is the formal submission package that proves the part and process can repeatedly meet requirements.

PPAP started in automotive and is now increasingly used in aerospace and other high-volume, precision manufacturing programs. In most environments, Level 2 and Level 3 submissions are most common. The level determines how much objective evidence is required, but OEMs often add their own template formats, required fields, and review rules.

In practice, teams need both generation and review workflows, plus support for customer-specific templates, to keep submissions moving without spreadsheet and email rework.

Typical Level 3 scope includes:

  • Part Submission Warrant (PSW)
  • First Article / dimensional evidence
  • Process capability and MSA studies
  • Process flow, control plan, and PFMEA artifacts

APQP and PPAP FAQ

What is the difference between APQP and PPAP?

APQP is the planning and execution framework that prepares a part for launch. PPAP is the formal evidence package submitted for customer approval once those activities are complete.

Can GroundControl support customer-specific PPAP templates?

Yes. GroundControl helps teams manage standard PPAP elements and customer-required formats in one workflow so submissions stay consistent across programs.

Does GroundControl help with revision control across APQP deliverables?

Yes. GroundControl keeps deliverables tied to part revision and approval status so teams can avoid version confusion during reviews.

How does this reduce PPAP turnaround time?

Guided workflows, centralized evidence, and structured validation reduce spreadsheet handoffs and rework, helping teams submit complete packages faster.
