If you build parts for an aerospace or defense OEM, you already know the drill. A drawing lands. Someone opens it, zooms to 400%, and starts drawing numbered bubbles around every dimension, tolerance, note, and feature control frame, sometimes 300 of them on a single sheet. Then they re-type all of it into an AS9102 Form 3. Then the CMM operator measures the part and someone re-types the results into the same form. Then a reviewer checks the whole thing against the print, one balloon at a time.

That process takes a good quality engineer four to eight hours per print. Software that automates ballooning exists to give quality teams some of that time back. But how do you decide which tool is right for you?

What ballooning actually does in an FAI submission

Under AS9102 Rev C (effective June 2023), a First Article Inspection Report has to demonstrate characteristic accountability: every design characteristic on the drawing must be uniquely identified, and every one of those identifiers must appear on Form 3 with its requirement, its measurement result, and a pass/fail designation.

The ballooned drawing is the bridge. Bubble #47 on the print maps to line 47 on Form 3. If a characteristic exists on the drawing but has no balloon, it has no line, and the FAIR is incomplete.

The three kinds of automated ballooning

Most software providers use the word "automatic," but they tend to mean different things by it.

Approach Description
CAD-linked extraction The tool reads a native 3D model or MBD dataset and pulls characteristics from the PMI already embedded in it. Accuracy is essentially perfect, because nothing is being recognized but actually read from structured data. However, it requires the model and does not work with just PDFs or scanned drawings.
Template/pattern OCR The tool runs optical character recognition over a PDF and applies pattern rules to identify dimensions and GD&T symbols. Some tools claim they will instantly identify and auto-balloon all GD&T features on your drawings across 20+ symbol types including true position, perpendicularity, cylindricity, and runout, and capture the exact location for every balloon. This works well on clean, digitally-generated prints. However, accuracy degrades on low-DPI scans, rotated views, hand annotations, and stacked tolerance callouts.
AI Extraction from Arbitrary Drawings The tool uses models tuned on manufacturing drawings rather than generic text, so it depends on neither a native model nor a clean, predictably formatted print. This is the approach GroundControl takes — parsing "dimensions, symbols, tolerances, and drawing notes. Even the oldest, hand-drawn prints." It's the only one of the three with a real answer for the legacy document-control system your customer actually ships from.

That distinction matters because of how automated ballooning fails. It fails silently. A tool that can't read a degraded scan doesn't announce it, but hands you a finished-looking balloon set with holes in it, and the holes surface weeks later as a source rejection. The two things that actually protect you are extraction quality on your worst drawings and a disciplined human review against the print before submission.

7 things to check before you buy

  1. Extraction on your worst drawing. Not a clean demo part. Send the vendor the ugliest scanned print in your active job list and count what it misses.
  2. Accuracy: What is the general percentage of accuracy in the vendor's auto-ballooning feature?
  3. Notes and general tolerances. A large share of missed characteristics live in the notes block and title-block default tolerances, not the views — but many tools only balloon the views.
  4. Balloon → Form 3 continuity. Does the extracted requirement (nominal, plus/minus, GD&T frame, sheet, zone) auto-populate Form 3, or does ballooning just produce a marked-up PDF that someone transcribes?
  5. CMM import path. You want results landing in Form 3 without re-keying. Look for imports from whatever you actually run (Calypso, PC-DMIS, PolyWorks, Verisurf, Micro-Vu, Keyence) including plain CSV/Excel.
  6. Export format and customer fit. If your OEM requires Net-Inspect submission or a custom FAIR template, confirm that export exists before you sign. GroundControl offers custom templates for export, so despite how your customer requests submission, you are set either way.
  7. Export-control and hosting posture. For ITAR or CUI drawings this is a gate, not a feature. Ask which environment the data sits in, who can access it, and what the vendor's support staff can see.
